Types of Sheen

Each sanding and refinishing process is different depending on the color and the type of finish the client wants. Each job is catered to the client’s vision, and we assist by giving our expertise. However, if you’re not sure what type of finish you want for your house or how your floors will look, this post will certainly assist in making a clear decision.

Glossy Finish

There are different types of sheens: satin, matte, gloss, semi-gloss. These sheens can make a difference on your floors. It will also depend on the species of hardwood floors you have and the type of polyurethane you use.

Matte finish is about 25% luster/sheen level. Matte finishing creates a clean look to floors and has little to no light reflection. This is easier to maintain since scratches and dust are a little less visible. The matte finish can look dull due to the low sheen, some clients may realize later that they prefer a higher amount of gloss. It is all about the client’s preference and their aesthetic decision.

Bona High Traffic HD Satin Sheen

Satin sheen is highly popular and recommended by professionals. The luster/sheen is at 40%which makes it is easier to maintain because it hides dirt and scratches. If you have pets, this is the best option to go with because their scratches and hair will be less noticeable.

Semi-Gloss Sheen on Checkered Floors

Semi-gloss allows your floors to look clear and shinier. The luster in semi-gloss is roughly 55% which is much less than glossy. If you want a shine and gloss appearance, this is more practical. However, be conscious that using an oil-based polyurethane will make it a bit shinier than a water-based polyurethane. It is also not recommended if you have pets or small children because the shiner you go, the more noticeable scratches, scuff marks, dust, and hair will be.

Glossy/high gloss luster is roughly 70% and is mainly applied on exotic hardwood to emphasize their graining. However, a gloss sheen shows imperfections on your floors and can even look like plastic. Also, it makes light reflect more, and dust appears to be more noticeable.

When deciding on the best type of sheen, consider if you have pets or small children. These considerations can help you decided if you want a matte or satin finish. Also, consider the type of hardwood floors you have. Do you have exotic floors and want the graining to be more noticeable? That’s when you can go with a gloss finish or a semi-gloss.
